Note: Come see me! We can work on combating shame together
Brown, B. (2008). I thought it was just me (but it isn't): Telling the truth about perfectionism,
inadequacy, and power. New York: Gotham Books.
Note: This is a good resource to help normalize your feelings of shame and help you create an atmosphere of support and connection.
Brown, B. (2010). The gifts of imperfection: Let go of who you think you're supposed to be and
embrace who you are. Center City, Minn.: Hazelden.
Note: This is another great book by the same author that challenges our ideals of perfection, and gives tools embrace our own imperfections.
Collard, P. (2014). The Little Book of Mindfulness: 10 Minutes a Day to Less Stress, More
Peace. London: Gaia Books
Note: I LOVE this little book. If you don’t want to read a big book, or invest a lot of time learning how to do mindfulness, then this is the book for you. I do a lot of these short exercises in session with clients to help them center themselves and slow down their processes.
MyFitnessPal: Available in the app store.
Note: This app can connect with your fitness watch if you have them. You can scan foods to help track your calories. My favorite thing about this app is that if you don’t log enough calories, it will not give you an approximation for the next 5 weeks, because it doesn’t want you to starve yourself to reach your goals.
Noom. Available in the app store
Note: This is a good app to help change your lifestyle and your relationship with food. It gives you psychology-based articles that focus on a lot of what I would say to my clients in session.
Van Dijk, S. (2012). Calming the Emotional Storm: Using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills
to Manage Your Emotions & Balance Your Life. California: New Harbinger Publications.
Note: I mentioned utilizing mindful eating and pivot techniques in the blog. This book can help you create these skills, as well as overall emotional regulation skills.
In the past months, ERC practitioners have encountered considerably more questions about psychedelic treatment and mental health.
In March, a UT bill was signed allowing a "Mental Illness Psychotherapy Drug Task Force" that will be required to “study and make recommendations on drugs that may assist in treating mental illness.” Studies to be conducted on psychedelics will include: psilocybin, LSD, and MDMA. (It will also allow continued research on cannabis). Recently, Netflix released 'How to Change Your Mind,' a four-part docu-series that discusses turning to psychedelics for mental health treatment.
ERC is carefully following: evidence-based research, the word of trusted physicians and psychiatrists, and curiously monitoring client outcomes, as they are utilizing ketamine treatment alongside talk therapy or somatic therapy. ERC does not have a medical health practitioner on-site.
Right now, psilocybin studies are specific to cancer treatment in Salt Lake City, but that may be changing soon; psilocybin, LSD, and MDMA are Schedule I drugs that are still criminalized. Consequences of carrying these substances are fines and incarceration.
That said, ketamine is being used in clinics to treat treatment-resistant depression which is also a component of PTSD/C-PTSD. If you are interested in being treated with ketamine, here are the two clinics we are following the closest:
https://www.cedarpsychiatry.com/all-locations
https://lotuscentertherapy.com/ketamine-treatment/ (with Dr. Wasek - who some of us know, personally)
Here is some literature on psychedelics:
Cannabis: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6985449/

Ketamine: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8715255/
LSD: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6985449/
Psilocybin: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/research/psychedelics-research.html
This resource list will be updated as evidence-based research changes or grows.
